How to choose powered USB hub

Shortly: ALL POWERED USB HUBS SUCK

All reasonably priced hubs what I tested malfunctioned after short period of time in different ways:

  • Device was lost and logs did not show anything else that device disconnected.
  • Large data transfer to USB stick did not work trough some USB hubs.
  • Different issues with OWFS, connected devices were not visible.

It was very annoying as sometimes nothing indicated it. Like other parts of the system kept running fine just relays did not switch anything or backup to USB stick worked only if USB stick was directly plugged into RPi.

Few examples also from kernel log, if you stumble on such messages, replace hub.

[12474.673569] usb 1-1.3.1.2: usbfs: USBDEVFS_CONTROL failed cmd owfs rqt 64 rq 2 len 0 ret -110

[175781.001091] usb 1-1.3: USB disconnect, device number 5

When I had enough of these hubs, I just bought Raspberry Pi B+ which has 4 USB sockets and to avoid overloading RPi I connected extra +5V power and ground cables to BV4627 relay controllers. After that system has been stable (over a month so far).

If anybody knows good reliable and also reasonable priced HUB let me and others know.
